Wabi-sabi Women! Stars Without Makeup

I was planning to do a beauty post today about how to do shimmery "smokey eye" makeup, but I was inspired by a conversation that I had with my sister today about "wabi-sabi". I referred to it as "ugly beauty" but wabi-sabi is a Japanese philosophy that celebrates beauty in what's natural... flaws and all.

It's applied to home decorating quite often - finding beauty in a wooden table even though it is scratched and worn, an heirloom rug that is worn in some places, a single branch in a vase.

It's a perfect philosophy for A Beautiful Little Life to embrace! We don't have the ability to go out and buy a new wardrobe every season, or refurnish our home on a whim. Yet the second hand (or third hand) table that we find at an estate sale is beautiful to us. If not, we know that we can MAKE it beautiful with a DIY trick or two!

Why not work to honor the natural, imperfect beauty in each other? We are a society obsessed with skinny youth. We're constant dieting and now it seems that botox injections are available on every corner. We strive to be like the stars in Hollywood and what we don't realize is that the stars we love - they look just like we do! See if you can identify these famous women without their makeup.

It's amazing how "normal" these women look and it makes me wonder more than just a little bit what all of the "normal" women I know would look like with a stylist, professional makeup artist and all of the help that the stars have available to them. Would women feel better about themselves knowing that they were beautiful as they are? Wrinkles, bags under their eyes, crooked nose and all?

clockwise starting top left - Rooney Mara, Katie Holmes, Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum, Mila Kunis, Vanessa Paradis, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Eva Longoria, Lady Gaga, Shakira.

2/25/14 update: Inspired by the stars of "The Today Show" and their "Love Your Selfie" campaign I have added some additional photos from their show on Monday. They celebrated NO MAKEUP MONDAY - even Kathie Lee was in! Way to go Today Show!
