Estate Sale Scores PART II

Here are pics of the "desk" and nightstand I scored last weekend at the estate sale.
Check them out!

Because we didn't really need another desk, we repurposed the unit as a bar in our dining room! It's very "Mad Men" with the shelf that drops down to reveal our boozy stash! Best of all... I can finally reach the liquor all by myself without even having to stand on a chair!

I love how much storage I have in my new nightstand. I was using a table before with a basket that had all of my "stuff" in it and it's so nice to have a shelf! The glass doors are nice, too, because they keep the kitty out of things she doesn't belong in!

$20 for the "bar" and $5 for the nightstand! Still building our collection - one piece at a time.

Cut up a watermelon in 2 minutes!

I've been dying for watermelon and bought my first one of the season today! It's not the best I've had, but it's delicious nonetheless. Thanks to C for telling me about this awesome trick!

First, cut both ends off of the watermelon.
Slice away the outside rind, working your way around until all you have left is the melon.
Cut it in half, then slice each half and flip them so that the slices run horizontally...
Like this!
Slice each stack, then rotate and slice again the other way to make cubes.
Seriously! About 2 minutes. Including rinsing and drying my hands to take all of these pictures!
A great pile of watermelon in no time at all!

Estate Sale Scores!

pair of white vintage lamps
I was making a quick run to CVS this morning and saw a sign for an estate sale. I really CANNOT drive past an estate sale, so I went to check it out.

They had a TON of stuff and it was priced to sell! It's been a very long time since I bought anything with the intention of reselling it, but I couldn't pass these things up - and I certainly can't keep it all! I'll be listing some of these great things on eBay in the next few days! As soon as I have them up, I'll post a link.

Cara Box Reveal

CARA BOX

cara (car-rah) noun   :   beloved friend

Cara Box is a gift exchange program that is coordinated through Kaitlyn at Wifessionals.com. Basically there is a different theme each month and you matched up with 2 others. One match is for someone you are sending a box to, and another match you are receiving a box from. It's a fabulous way to connect on a personal level with 2 different bloggers. One of my favorite things to do is gift giving. I love selecting things that I think the person will really like, and really, who doesn't like receiving gifts!

For the month of April, our theme was "GREEN" to celebrate Earth Day. I sent a box to Maria from "Keeping It Stepford" (www.keepingitstepford.com) and received a FAB gift box from Ashley at "Hello Ashleyy" (http://hell0ashleyy.blogspot.com) who, by the way has the most ADORABLE daughter!

Here are the goodies that came in my Cara Box from Ashley. Again, the theme was Green for the month and I got a package of reusable sandwich bags. I know I'll use them for picnics this summer! Also included was a new water bottle with its own filter, a new notebook made from recycled paper, a bottle of Mrs. Meyers dish soap, and some treats - organic mints and dark chocolate. (the BEST!)

Thanks so much Ashley for putting so much thought into your gifts for me! You are awesome!

If you are interested in joining in the gift exchange program Cara Box you can learn more about it HERE. You don't have to be a blogger to join in, and its a lot of fun!

Kantha Quilts from Recycled Sari's

I'm totally obsessed with the lightweight summer quilts - many of them handmade in India from vintage sari's - and all of them are absolutely beautiful. They are priced as you would expect an heirloom quality quilt to be priced, (means they are expensive!) but I was able to find a great price on a throw sized kantha for the foot of our bed. LOVE THEM!

Earth Friendly Henna Hair Dye

In honor of Earth Day, I thought I'd feature a post on using Henna to color your hair. Henna is becoming more and more popular as a safe alternative to traditional hair dye. It's totally safe to use on every type of hair - permed, bleached, tinted, or "virgin" hair and creates natural, vibrant highlights.

I've used it several times to not only cover up the %*>!@$ gray hair that is becoming more and more present, but also to give my hair a bit more body and shine. Of all of the brands that I've used, I like Aviga Henna the best. You can buy it at some food coop stores, or you can order online from somewhere like Ball Beauty.

Jennifer Lawrence's New Shag Haircut!

My last post was all about my obsession with Susan Sarandon's shag haircut for spring. I'm not REPLACING her with Jennifer Lawrence, but I'm adding Jennifer to my list of starlets who have embraced the shag! YESTERDAY! The headline refers to it as a "Lob" but in the third paragraph of this piece from Harper's Bazaar, Mark Townsend (her stylist) says, "so we went with a full-on shag, with bangs and a lot of face-framing layers."

I'm making my appointment tomorrow - and bringing along these pictures! What a fun, easy cut for spring!

Fresh Hair for Spring

Susan Sarandon
This morning on "Live with Kelly and Michael", Carson Kressley was Kelly's co-host, and I <3 Carson Kressley so I had to tune in! Susan Sarandon, another longtime favorite of mine was a guest and what an incredible beauty she is!

First of all, I can't believe that she is 66 years old. Second, I am totally in love with her hair! The SHAG has been around for years, but it seems to be gaining in popularity.

It's amazing how a new haircut can make you feel like a new woman and there is no better time to make a dramatic change than in the spring. This layered chop is sure to be a trend for spring with top stars like Heidi Klum, Alexa Chung, Nicole Ritchie, Zoe Saldana, Diane Kruger, Jessica Alba and Ashlee Simpson all sporting a fringe!

Beautiful Little Gifts

I have lots of occasions coming up that require a small gift... a token of friendship, a thank-you, a bit of encouragement. Some will require something a bit more... a fiftieth birthday, a wedding. I went online to find some gift wrap inspiration and found SO many beautiful little gifts!

Giving gifts is one of my favorite things. I love finding just the right thing to give. Something beautiful, something that the receiver will love and yet would never buy themselves. I take it on as a personal challenge!

Work at Home Daily To Do List

This week's edition of "Work at Home Wednesday" is a little different. Everyone recommends that you use a checklist or a "to do" list to make sure that you're organizing your time properly. When you work at home, something the most basic things are the ones that are the most neglected! Here's my "To Do List" for those of us who work at home.

Robin's in Cambria Salmon Bisque Recipe

In m"California Dreamin'" post I talked about stopping at Robin's in Cambria for some of their fabulous Salmon Bisque. The atmosphere at Robin's is so fab... I could NEVER even come close to recreating it at home, but I do have the recipe for the amazing, delicious, best-ever, Robin's Restaurant's Salmon Bisque! I have made it at home a few times and it is DIVINE! You'll find the recipe after the jump!

Nepenthe's Triple Berry Pie Recipe

If you saw my post "California Dreamin" you saw a stop at Nepenthe's for Triple Berry Pie on the itinerary. I'm happy to say that I found the recipe on Epicurious.com! I can't wait to give it a try. The recipe can be found here after the jump!

California Dreamin'

Nasty weather here in Minneapolis has me wanting to run away to sunny California! My hubby and I have been talking about renting a convertible and driving highway 1 - our itinerary inspired by Coastal Living Magazine's February issue.

Waiting for Watermelon

This is the spring that refuses to happen. They are, once again, forecasting snow for the Minneapolis/St. Paul area! It has me dreaming of warm summer days...

What is it that you are most excited for when the weather warms up?

For me it's wearing flip flops, green grass, long walks with the pooch, hammock time in the back yard, Twins games with my hubby, watermelon and corn on the cob.

How about you?

Bird Nerd!

I love birds! One of my favorite things to do in the summertime is sit out back and listen to the birds chirping. My kids called me a "bird nerd" and I guess they are right!

I've found SO many awesome bird items on-line that I thought I'd share some of my favorites with you!

Thrift Store Finds

I love stopping into the local thrift store to see what they have. It's kind of like a treasure hunt for me and I stop in frequently. Sometimes I find a TON of great stuff, and sometimes I find nothing. It's always hit or miss, but today I found some great treasures for spring!

I love the bag and can't wait to take it to the beach this summer! It's absolutely gorgeous - there's no way that a picture can do it justice, but I'll try!

And the vest is one of those things that you can throw on over leggings and a tank top to go run errands.

Work at Home Wednesday in MANGO!

Mango is one of my new favorite lines for spring and my very favorite thing of all is their printed jersey trousers. Can you get any more comfortable than elastic waist pants for working at home? Best of all, they actually look good enough to wear out in public!

I like that the individual pieces in the Mango spring collection are very basic, but the textures and colors make them unique. Did I mention that they have stretch waist pants that look really nice? Oh yeah!

Delicious Egg Bake - Perfect for Brunch!

I've still been feeling a bit under the weather... I don't know if it's allergies because of the snow melt, the beginnings of buds starting to pop out on the trees or what's going on but I can't seem to shake this yucky feeling. Thankfully, I have lots of leftovers from the weekend and I've not had to cook much!

A big hit around here on Easter morning was a super simple egg bake that I made with ham, red peppers, onion and spinach. My son said it was the best egg bake that I had ever made!
