Rearrange Your Room: 15 Tips to Create A Fresh Look for Spring

I love rearranging the furniture in our house. I do it twice a year in the living room - once in the fall and again in the spring. Why?

It's easy to deep clean when you're moving things around. If you don't move your sofa, when will you ever clean the junk out from underneath it?

I like to keep the windows clear during the spring and summer months so that I can easily access them to open them. During the summer months, our sectional sofa is in the corner across from the windows with a reclining chair near the windows. During the winter months, I like to create a more warm & cozy feeling and split up the sectional into two sofas that face each other.

Moving around our furniture helps me get a new perspective on our home. It's a great creative outlet for me and it makes it easier to notice things that need maintenance or repair.

Here are some tips I've found for rearranging furniture to give your home a fresh feeling this spring along with photos of some of my favorite rooms to inspire you:

Some say to remove everything from the room and start with a blank canvas. I NEVER do that, but you might prefer to... It's your room so you get to pick! You might just remove some of the smaller things that will get in your way.

Place your largest pieces first to anchor the space. Small furniture can easily be moved around them, but large pieces can sometimes only fit in a few spots.

Measure twice, move once. Not sure if your sofa will fit along a wall? Measure it before you move it. You'll save time and your back!

Bring in the muscle! Find someone to help you move heavy pieces so that you don't hurt yourself. Maybe you and a friend or neighbor can take turns helping each other!

Clean as you go. Deep clean the area where you plan to put the sofa. Pull it out from the current location, deep clean where it was, then move it to its new spot!

Be practical. If you're rearranging your living room and your primary activity in that room is watching television, don't have your sofa facing the fireplace - away from the TV.  You can always change it around again for winter so that the fireplace is the focal point.

Make sure every seating area has a table nearby or a place to set a drink... even if it's a pile of books on the floor!

Use an area rug to anchor the space. They can help create a conversation area AND they make a room feel more cozy and inviting.

Don't be afraid to move furniture across rooms! Bring a desk into the living room as a console table. Move a dresser to the dining room for storage. Move a love seat to your spare bedroom.

Make sure there's ample storage. If you have a lot of large books or board games that your family enjoys, bring in a cabinet, bookshelves, or even a table that has storage space underneath.

Mix it up. Combine different sizes and textures in a room for a cozy, eclectic vibe. Mix patterns and color. If you prefer a traditional, serene look, keep the furniture scale and fabrics similar.

For interest and excitement, use asymmetrical influences - like three different sized candles instead of an identical pair. Balance is important if you want a restful room.

Bring in some meaningful items. Your great grandfather's chest, your dads guitar, your moms books, family photos.

Use lots of green plants.

Be objective. Step back and look at your room like a stranger would or a decorator. Use fresh eyes.

Don't:
  • Use too many pieces of furniture in any room.
  • Block the natural flow of traffic.
  • Let it get too cluttered with too many small decorating pieces.
  • Keep all of your furniture pushed back against the walls.

The best thing about rearranging your furniture is that if you don't like the way it looks when you're done, you can just keep moving things around until you find an arrangement that suits you!
